چکیده

The yield of neutrons produced by cosmic ray muons at a shallow depth of 32 meters of water equivalent has been measured. The Palo Verde neutrino detector, containing 11.3 tons of Gd loaded liquid scintillator and 3.5 tons of acrylic served as a target. The rate of one and two neutron captures was determined. Modeling the neutron capture efficiency allowed us to deduce the total yield of neutrons Y tot = (3.60 ± 0.09 ± 0.31) × 10 −5 neutrons per muon and g/cm 2. This yield is consistent with previous measurements at similar depths.

A new numerical model of particle propagation in the Galaxy has been developed, which allows the study of cosmic-ray and gamma-ray production and propagation in 2D or 3D, including a full reaction network. This is a further development of the code which has been used for studies of cosmic ray reacceleration, Galactic halo size, antiprotons and positrons in cosmic rays, the interpretation of dif...

Altitude Variation of cosmic-ray neutron energy spectrum and ambient dose equivalent at Mt

The experimental studies on the cosmic-ray neutron energy spectrum and the neutron dose rate were performed in the Mt.Fuji area (altitude: 40m – 2400m) by using a Multi-sphere neutron Spectrometer (Bonner Sphere: BS) with the 5.07-cm diam. spherical He-3 proportional counter to assess the natural background neutron dose rate in Japan with good accuracy. The spectra measured at each altitude wer...
